POCKET MONSTERS

THE PASSING OF LIGHT

Drawing inspiration from the Renaissance period, Melbourne-based photographer Emmanuel Santos presents and illuminating and theatrical series of angels and biblical visions in the exhibition The Passing of Light. It shows at the silverlens gallery from 6 September to 2 October. For over a decade, Santos has researched sacred texts to present a conceptual interpretation of legends and myths surrounding the ephemeral domains of the divine. The 38 photographs presented here draw on the holy scriptures of the Bible, the Torah, and the Koran. In all of the works, Santos presents a dramatic backdrop of recognizable places – from ancient, sacred sites to the bustling, modern metropolis of famous cities. In the foreground, Santos’s angels fly, swoop, listen, crouch, comfort, or salvage lost faith, broken trust and innocence - according to their individual narratives.

Born in the Philippines in 1957, Emmanuel Santos migrated to Melbourne in 1982. A photo essayist specializing in areas of ethnology, spirituality and social documentary, Santos began his photographic career working for the United Nations High Commission for Refugees. He has had numerous solo and group exhibitions in Australia, Singapore, Japan, Belguim, France, the Ukraine, Israel and Brazil. His work is also widely collected and published. This is his first show in the Philippines.

As a part of the Saturday gallery events for the exhibit, Emmanuel Santos will be giving an Artist Talk on September 8, from 3-5pm. silverlens gallery is located at 2320 Pasong Tamo Extension, Warehouse 2, Yupangco Building. A Song on the End of the World by Czeslaw Milosz
Translated by Anthony Milosz

On the day the world ends
A bee circles a clover,
A fisherman mends a glimmering net.
Happy porpoises jump in the sea,
By the rainspout young sparrows are playing
And the snake is gold-skinned as it should always be.

On the day the world ends
Women walk through the fields under their umbrellas,
A drunkard grows sleepy at the edge of a lawn,
Vegetable peddlers shout in the street
And a yellow-sailed boat comes nearer the island,
The voice of a violin lasts in the air
And leads into a starry night.

And those who expected lightning and thunder
Are disappointed.
And those who expected signs and archangels' trumps
Do not believe it is happening now.
As long as the sun and the moon are above,
As long as the bumblebee visits a rose,
As long as rosy infants are born
No one believes it is happening now.

Only a white-haired old man, who would be a prophet
Yet is not a prophet, for he's much too busy,
Repeats while he binds his tomatoes:
No other end of the world will there be,
No other end of the world will there be.

THE DIAMOND AGE

WAYRD

WAYRD: A SOLO SHOW
PHOTOGRAPHS & DIGITAL ARTS of DONDON VILLALUZ
September 6, 2007
7:00 PM onwards
@ PENGUIN GALLERY
Remedios Street, Malate Manila

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

“I draw my inspiration from the scenes around me, personal experiences, and social reality, working with digital media from my own original photographs and drawings, with a reflection into past representationalism, trying to make subtle comment on our culture.

I embrace new technology, new ways of creating images and art, as fellow artists have done long before me.

The digital camera offers amazing effects and techniques as well as computer’s logic can present and allow manipulation of an image on it’s screen, to an incredible degree, but it has no concept of how things should be, and so… the infinity of creativity, that is left to the artist.”

Dondon Villaluz is an experimental photographer, a digital artist, a self taught painter, a muralist, a graphic and web designer and a dreamer, who always dream of peace, unity and freedom in its truest sense. Digitally inspired by the works of Kevin Rolly and his oilgraphy, fascinated by the warm colors, lights and shadows of Rembrandt.

TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2007

FILMS FROM THE PHILIPPINES

Our commitment to films from the Philippines dates back over two decades. For great directors like Lino Brocka, Toronto was a second home. More recently we have premiered important digital films from the new generation using this cutting edge technology to make truly independent cinema.

2005 heralded an introduction to digital Philippine cinema with Brillante Mendoza's first feature film The Masseur.

2006 brought Jeffrey Jeturian's Kubrador (The Bet Collector), featuring a stunning performance by Gina Pareno; and Mel Chionglos Twilight Dancers, which struck a balance between steamy drama and serious social comment.

2007 presents a unique opportunity to emerging and established filmmakers in the Philippines to showcase some of the most exciting contemporary cinema in the country today, as well as create benchmarks in making films with limited resources in the digital video format.

DEATH IN THE LAND OF ENCANTOS Lav Diaz, Philippines

After seven years, Filipino poet Benjamin Agusan (Roeder Camanag) returns to his hometown of Padang after Super Typhoon Durian devastates and buries it under mud. He wanders around the obliterated village meeting old friends and lovers. Shot in rich black and white, DEATH IN THE LAND OF ENCANTOS expresses an inexhaustible belief in the regenerative power of both nature and art.

SLINGSHOT Brillante Mendoza, Philippines

An intimate glimpse into the lives of small time crooks in Manila during a simultaneous election period and Holy Week.

PHILIPPINE SCIENCE Auraeus Solito, Philippines

FLATBED STORIES

Gerardo Tan
Flatbed Stories
until 8 September 2007

Where does object end and image begin? How does the visual reproduce itself? Flatbed Stories, an exhibition of Gerardo Tan's recent paintings rendered in oil on canvas, discreetly engages the viewer in such queries. Using collage-based works, Tan explores processes involving the mechanical and manual replication of images and demonstrates how these can extend to a seemingly endless stream.

In Flatbed Stories, Tan sources images for his paintings from collages comprised of exhibit invitations and promotional posters for recent art shows. These materials were gathered in the span of two weeks and then made into collages: a jarring disarray of composite images constructed and cropped, juxtaposed at random, stained with spilled paint, and assembled into a whole composition. The artist then captures digital images of these collages through a flatbed scanner, producing full-color prints which are utilized as visual references for his paintings. Tan later on intends to take digital photographs of the existing paintings in the mag:net show, reproduce these as printed images and use the products as materials for yet another set of collages.

For an artist such as Tan, who has been producing collage-based works since 1990 and explored various facets of installation art, engaging in this process seems to be a gesture of reflexivity. It becomes an act of self-reference made possible by mechanically reproducing the visual, ad infinitum. For instance, the invitations and posters used source materials for Tan's first “batch” of collages are in themselves (mostly) digital images of existing works by other contemporary artists. By using these as sources for his works, Tan intentionally refers to past exhibitions that he visited during a defined span of time and consciously redirects the visual information back to his own works. The ensuing process of building collages are both manual and technological interventions that “reclassify” Tan's recollections of the shows that he visited, constructing a continuum of time and space from the fragmented icons associated with these.

Tan's intentional “in-breeding” or evolution of images does not stop with the Flatbed Stories show: if all goes well as intended, the entire process of visual configuration and replication that the artist initiated with his collages may extend to other sites, contexts, and occasions.

Flatbed Images will be on view up to September 8 (Saturday), 2007 at Mag:net Gallery, located at the AGCOR Building 335 Katipunan Avenue (fronting Miriam and Ateneo), Quezon City. For more inquiries please call 9293191 or visit www.magnet.com.ph.
