KALARO

About the exhibition:

Norman Dreo’s new exhibition presents the child in need of the warmth of a hug, attention and constant love. Kalaro (Playmate) is an apt title for the show as Norman throws stuffed toys, dolls and semi-mechanized robots to engage lonely children. The fascination for play and the sublimation of psychological wants and needs for attention turn into wild imaginings in the minds of toddlers. Temporary friends turn out to be real friends. They are always available when the children need them. All they have to do is to open their closet and find them there, waiting eagerly for them.

With toys, who needs anything else?

About the artist:

Norman Dreo (born 1970) topped the talent test upon entering the College of Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines in the mid-80s. His art has been exhibited extensively in the Philippines, Singapore, Vermont, USA and in Europe. He has won several prizes at the Metrobank National Art Competition, Art Association of the Philippines and Ateneo Art Awards. In 2000, he was awarded Juror’s Choice at the Philip Morris ASEAN Art Awards in Singapore and the Philippines. This is his eighth solo exhibition and second in Singapore.
