Abstractionist artist Sio Montera takes an opposite direction with small-scale paintings in this exhibition of texture, gesture, and color, titled “Sio on Canvas”. The artist shows the breadth of his skill in non-figurative paintings as his new collection reflects a conspicuous blend of personal encounters, technique, and intuition.
Recent travels, the election fever, fatherhood, debt, life and death, recur and take symbolic meaning in the expressionist, compact paintings. The artist has succeeded in creating a space where reflection – here, a stand in for memory – can face primary experience. Sio Montera demonstrates his versatility by choosing to work on a limited surface in comparison to the often oversize canvases of previous exhibitions.
A different sensibility also prevails in Montera’s new art works. Here he still wrestles with seemingly uncontrollable forces but in works like Sighting of Anubis (2010) and Mornings After (2010), the size factor has allowed the artist to slow down and attend to the nuances of gesture. ‘Sio on Canvas’ the exhibit is being presented by Canvas Bistro Bar Gallery located at the 2nd Level, The Terraces, Ayala Center Cebu. The show will formally open on April 14 and runs until May 16, 2010. Canvas Bistro Bar Gallery specializes in Australian cuisine and is open daily from 10am to 9pm.
