The Light Show: Manila Contemporary’s 2nd anniversary exhibition
Manila Contemporary celebrates its 2nd anniversary this December with The Light Show, an exhibition of light sculptures and objects that transform the gallery into a welcoming lounging space. Conceptual artist and curator Katya Guerrero collaborates with twelve artists who work with their hands in exploring themes of design, technology and spirituality. The exhibition establishes a structured and collaborative environment of the themes from the production of the exhibition to the display of art pieces.
The Light Show stems from the belief that one may need to experience darkness to have a renewed appreciation of light. For this exhibit, Guerrero instructs the participating artists to re-discover light – its past, present and future – by asking the very simple question “What is light?” Participating artists are Kris Abrigo, Juan Alcazaren, Bea Camacho, Jin Joson, Michael Manalo, Lui Medina, Jet Melencio, Wawi Navarroza, Kaloy Olavidez, Trek Valdizno, Costantino Zicarelli, and Brendan Kellogg. To prepare for this project, each artist did research about light and took in information, which they felt was relevant and interesting to them and used it to develop a personal work.
The exhibit opens on December 11 at 6pm, the opening also serving as a Christmas gathering for the gallery’s artist friends, patrons and guests. This event also marks Manila Contemporary’s 2nd year in the Filipino art industry. On December 13, 2008, Manila Contemporary held its grand opening show All I Want for Christmas at its current home in Whitespace, Pasong Tamo Extension Makati. This first exhibition was followed by a string of successful solo and group shows participated by local and foreign artists from Southeast Asia and other regions. In its two years, Manila Contemporary has kept with its vision of providing a venue for artistic practice and pushing the limits of contemporary art.
The Light Show opens on Saturday, 11 December 2010 at 6pm in Manila Contemporary. Manila Contemporary is located at Whitespace, 2314 Pasong Tamo Extension, Brgy. Magallanes, Makati City. For inquiries about the exhibition, please contact Sidd at 844 7328 or email to s.perez@manilacontemporary.com
