ID is a three-installment series of exhibitions conducted by a group of individuals of diverse creative practice, derived from a common root that is the Recto culture. These exhibits would define these artists’ identities and the link between where they originated and how they were transmuted to who they are at present, an assessment of what they have lost and what they have gained away from the culture. Each installment would attempt to either invoke or respond, or connect and explore the question “Who am I?” pertaining to themselves as individuals or a product that took shape from the same historical reservoir that is Recto and in what ways this culture is being echoed in their respective artistic routines.
The first leg of the ID shows would divulge in the life of Eugenio Mallabo Recto from the documentations and artifacts collected from his existence. The installation is proposed to create testimony of an identity that purely existed on falsehood, imagining illusory events that took place in the life of our nonexistent persona. An identity completely made in Recto that would narrate to the artists partaking in this exhibit as specialists of both the DIY (Do it yourself) and the HIDBO (Have it done by others) cultures, both evident in the busy avenue that created their identities. Documents such as birth, baptismal, marriage, death and other certificates, identification cards, passports, licenses, and other forms of proof like name patches, campaign streamers and shirts were processed and contrived by the artists from Recto Avenue and is to be mounted on a tangled mesh of nylon strings across the walls of the gallery creating a misapprehension that the objects are suspended in mid-air, permitting the audience to provide validation to Mr. Recto as a reality thus validating the artists realities as well.
