Second, a rare performance of Shibari, a Japanese art form of rope bondage, followed by a demonstration and talk with the only Shibari expert in the Philippines, Shinobi.

And ending the night would be MONDO BIZARRO, 90 minutes of the most mind-bending genre cinema from around the world. Narrated live by Andrew Leavold, an Australian alternative cinema connoisseur and founder TRASH VIDEO, Australia's largest alternative rental store.

KINO-SINE

KINO-SINE: Philippine-German Cinema Relations

Edited by Tilman Baumgärtel

Contributions by Jürgen Brüning, Ditsi Carolino, Lav Diaz, Nick Deocampo, Harun Farocki, Ulrich Gregor, Nan Goldin, Christoph Janetzko, Mark Meily, Ingo Petzke, Rosa von Praunheim, Raymond Red, Roxlee, Werner Schroeter, Bobby Suarez, Kidlat Tahimik, John Torres, Maria Vedder and Michael Wulfes

Beginning in the mid-1970’s and continuing through the 1980’s and into the 1990’s, a number of German film directors, theorists and other movie people came to work or teach in the Philippines. Some came because the Goethe-Institut Manila had invited them for workshops and film presentations. Others came at their own expense because they were fascinated by Philippines, which– after the People Power revolution of 1986 that ousted the Marcosregime– exercised its own peculiar kind of magnetism on many Europeans. The workshops “the Germans” conducted and the film screenings they presented were in part responsible for the emergence of an alternative film scene in the Philippines that went on to garner recognition and awards at international film festivals in the 1980s.
This book deals with the “Sine-Kino- Connection”. It documents the beginnings of the experimental and alternative film movement of the 1980s in the Philippines. And, at the same time, it deals with a part of German film history that few people in Germany are aware of. Today a new generation of independent Filipino filmmakers is emerging and once again garnering critical acclaim in the Philippines and abroad. This book provides an historical perspective on the earlier development of experimental, non-mainstream film in the Philippines.

Published by the Goethe-Institut Manila 2007
Exclusively distributed by Anvil Publishing, Pasig City, The Philippines
ISBN 978-971-27-2025-3

The book will have its international launch at the Annual Southeast Asian Cinemas Conference in Jakarta and at the Asian Hotshots Festival in Berlin, Germany.

LIVING STORIES

When one enters the loft of Palma Tayona, one is immediately struck by the spartan arrangements. A couple of tables, a sofa, piles of books and a wall covered by drawings, paintings and unfinished canvasses. At the end of a long spacious studio is a big window that floods the entire space with light. "This is where I look at how life passes along Libertad below. Do you know that Libertad means freedom? That's how I feel everyday. That's what I live for everyday." He quips.

Born in Manila, Palma Tayona took up his Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts majoring in Industrial Design from the University of the Philippines. After college, he worked for almost a decade as a freelance artist and graphic designer until he finally decided to work full time as a painter.

His works convey the humor that he derives from his penchance for bulbous, even obese figures that conjure shades of Botero. However, it is only in the manner he shows girth that Palma Tayona's works resemble that of the latter. They do not take after that quality of parodying canonical works of art or caricature figures of authority. Since Palma Tayona has also done children's illustrations, his sensibility veers on the innocent. His art is along a naive sentiment, his colors and lines assuming a distinct dreamlike quality, of nostalgia, of filial bonding, of love and longing. Images and emotions derived from a life of living full.

At the heart of each of his painting is a celebration of emotions, of a place or person both from some distant past or a poignant event in his life. Like any artist by heart, Palma Tayona distinct style and colors merits notice.

THE 2009 NATIONAL ARTIST AWARDS

NCCA ANNOUNCES ACCEPTANCE OF ENTRIES TO THE 2009 NATIONAL ARTIST AWARDS

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) is now accepting nominations for the new batch of the Order of National Artists for conferment in 2009.

Order of the National Artists is the highest national recognition being given to Filipino individuals who have made significant contributions to the development of Philippine arts - in music, dance, theater, visual arts, literature, film and broadcast arts, and architecture and allied arts.

PA on Culture and NCCA Executive Director Cecile Guidote Alvarez said that the award embodies the country’s highest ideals in humanism and aesthetic expression through distinct achievements of individuals in any of the seven fields of the arts being conferred by the President of the Philippines every three years.

“In 2003, through Executive Order 236, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo conferred additional prestige on the award by raising it to the level of a Cultural Order, fourth in precedence among the orders that comprise the Honors Code of the Philippines,” added Guidote-Alvarez.

Eligible to be nominated for the National Artists are living artists who are Filipino citizens as well as those who died after the establishment of the award in 1972; artists who through the content and form of their works have contributed in building a sense of nationhood; and have pioneered a mode of creative expression which earned distinction and has an impact on succeeding generations of artists and consistently displayed excellence in the practice of their art form thus enriching artistic expression or style.

“Broad acceptance through prestigious national or international recognition, critical acclaim and reviews of their works, and the respect and esteem from peers, is a big plus factor for consideration,” said Guidote-Alvarez.

The nomination may be submitted by any government and non-government cultural organizations and educational institutions, as well as private foundations and councils on or before December 31, 2007 with a cover letter signed by the head of the organization accompanied by a board resolution approving the nominee, a duly accomplished nomination form, detailed curriculum vitae of the nominee, list of significant works categorized according to the criteria, with latest photograph, copies of published reviews and any other documents that may be required by the secretariat.

All correspondences, nomination forms, and supporting materials should be addressed to the National Artists Award Secretariat through the CCP Office of the Artistic Director in Roxas Boulevard, Pasay City or at the NCCA-Office of the Deputy Executive Director in Intramuros, Manila. The NCCA and CCP are jointly administering the award and made recommendations to the President.

The official nomination form can be downloaded at http://www.ncca.gov.ph/about_ncca/national_artist_guidelines.php or get in touch with Frances Alincastre at 527-2192 local 503 or 511.

In the thirty-five years of the award, it was already given to 57 Filipino artists of which 15 are still living - Napoleon Abueva (Sculture, 1976), Lucresia R. Kasilag (Music, 1988), Arturo Luz (Visual Arts, 1997), Daisy Avellana (Theater, 1999), Edith Tiempo (Literature, 1999), Andrea Veneracion (Music, 1999), F. Sionil Jose (Literature, 2001), Virgilio S. Almario (Literature, 2003), Salvador F. Bernal (Theater and Design, 2003), Alejandro R. Roces, Jr. (Literature, 2003), Eddie Romero (Film and Broadcast Arts, 2003), and the batch 2006 awardees - Bienvenido Lumbera (Literature), Ildefonso P. Santos, Jr. (Landscape Architecture), Abdulmari Asia Imao (Sculpture) and Benedicto R. Cabrera (Visual Arts).

Aside from the rank and title, medallion and citation, a proclaimed National Artist will have the following privileges – a cash award of Php 100,000.00 for living awardees and Php 75,000.00 for posthumous awardees, a monthly life pension, medical and hospitalization benefits, life insurance coverage for those whoa re still insurable, arrangements and expenses for a State Funeral and a place of honor at national state functions and recognition at cultural events.
The National Artists Award was established under Proclamation 1001 in 1972 and first conferred to Fernando Amorsolo on that same year. Proclamation 1144 mandated the CCP Board of Trustees to administer the award including the privileges and honors to National Artists and in 1992, upon the creation of NCCA under Republic Act 7356, the two institutions are now jointly administering the award.

Guidote-Alvarez added that the National Artists award being bestow by the Republic, is not only a recognition of highest achievements in the arts but it in turns honors our own cultural heritage and the Filipino expression of culture and traditions, history, way of life and aspirations.

SPECIAL FEATURE : THE MARIYAH GALLERY

Established in 1992, Mariyah Gallery in Dumaguete City Negros Oriental Philippines has been dedicated to the promotion and advancement of art and culture. It is the coordinating and implementing body of the Dumaguete Open Biennial Terra Cotta Art Festival Exhibit and Competition, which successfully launched its first year of series of events in 2005.

Haven to visual artists, the Gallery also hosts other events. The Gallery offers its space to activities like the Philippine Writing Workshop, directed by the National Artist for Literature, Dr. Edith L. Tiempo. It also lends its space and extends its services to performers based in the locality and neighboring provinces. In 1994, it assisted the Visayas Islands Visual Artists Exhibit and Conference (VIVA-ExCon) hold their series of activities in Dumaguete City. It also initiates Art Workshops for children and adults during summer and for every opportunity if afforded by time.

The Gallery offers a Residency Program on Terra Cotta to artists that show high interest in the medium. The Residency is held every two year with the main objective of meeting one requirement of the Terra Cotta Biennial, that is to produce well-meaning terra cotta works for the Special Exhibition, one of the relevant features of the Biennial. The Residency is also a vital step for the Gallery’s interest on the resulting application of clay as a medium on the following considerations: the artist’s contemporary pursuit in art making, art form, artistic motivation(s), and discourses that come with every attempt of using the medium.

One of the objectives of the Gallery at present is to continue its studies on the different clay types that can be found in the island of Negros, and on related matters that might be of profound relevance to the continuity of the artist’s interest in exploring the medium and the tradition of the potter.

Although the Gallery gives preference to project related art exhibition (s), it accepts proposal for art exhibitions on any medium from individual artist or group of artists whose aims or offers are good.

Also home to Cristina “Kitty” S. Taniguchi, Maria S. Taniguchi and Danni Sollesta, Mariyah Gallery is located within the city area. It is approximately 3 to 5 minute ride from the Dumaguete Airport, the Dumaguete Warf, and the commercial area. It has an extensive garden that is used for sculptures and other installations, and has a wall area that can accommodate at least 10 to 15 regular size paintings.

Mariyah Gallery was a member of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts – National Committee on Art Galleries in June 2005 to July 2007. It is duly registered with the Security and Exchange Commission Office and the Department of Trade and Industry.
