About the exhibition:
The Javanese pay close attention to the proper observance of all aspects of life in all its minute details. It is considered very important that life is arranged in an ordered way, where ceremony becomes the rule which is later fixed into cultural tradition. The theme covers various events from marriage, pregnancy, childhood, adulthood, to everyday activities such as the making of handicrafts, marketing, and recreational pursuits. Ever the astute observer, Roedy Mardijanto documents his countrymen engaged in their rich native culture, typically stylized with demure black eyes and expressive pursed lips.
About the artist:
Born in Blora, Central Java in 1967, Roedy Mardijanto graduated from the Art Academy ISI Yogyakarta, and has participated in a variety of exhibitions in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Solo, Malang, Surabaya and Bali since 1985. He received an award from ISI Yogyakarta in 1987, and was a finalist in the Phillip Morris Indonesian Art Award in 2001. Jagade Wong Jowo is his second solo exhibition in Singapore.
