Misbegotten Son in the Terror East
10 July - 5 August 2010
Great Korean video artist Nam june Paik said today's art is like pre-historic. Pre-historic age had no letter and is dubbed as the age of image. After passing the age of letter, the age of image is back again. It was there that Nam june Paik predicted this. Like ancient human who made windows to connect to the unknown world through images, today we are making a window of images which is represented by the internet. But today's images are different from those in the pre-historic age - they are drawn with letters. It is the era of technical imagination that corresponds to the post history argued by post-structuralist French philosophy. In this age, boundary between reality and imagination becomes more vague. In this age, the frame of western modern philosophy which divides and defines that the world is object, and human is subject, is dissolved. This new era - the age of image - is more continual, more direct, more momentary than the age of letter. Culture of this time has some features characteristic of appropriation, sharing, composite, subculture and kitsch.
Jucar Raquepo uses graffiti technique and mixes diversity of images which are usually from subculture. Explanation of the age of image can be exactly applied to Jucar's works with his trademark subculture, kitsch, and composition. Like web interfaces, and clip art sticking unto and dragged to the canvasses of Jucar, ideas interweave with each other. His works are also full of mischief and satire ...parody by parody. These pictures look rough but are refined by ideals representing the modern image culture. Third world kitsch and the Philippine street scene colors are also very evident in the works, hence Raquepo paints modern emotion and Philippine's inherent feeling at the same time.
Jucar Raquepo mounts his solo show "Misbegotten Son In The Terror East" at Mag:net Gallery Katipunan featuring works done in a 6-month artist's residency in Seoul, South Korea. Raquepo has been creating works in Seoul under a grant from The National Museum Of Contemporary Art Korea, and has also participated in a residency program and public art project under the Incheon Arts Foundation. His exhibition in Manila is also being sponsored by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts in celebration of the "Philippines as ASEAN Cultural Capital for 2010-2011". "Misbegotten Son In The Terror East" will be held on July 10, 2010 and will run up to August 5, 2010.
