THE SATURDAY GROUP CELEBRATES FORTY-TWO YEARS WITH ART AT THE SHANG ON JULY 14, 2010. The Philippines’ premiere art group, boasting of seven National Artists in its lengthy roster of talented painters, gathers another show of force in the much-awaited anniversary exhibition.
With their depiction of abstracts, still lifes, flowers, landscapes, nudes and mother and child themes, The Saturday Group has held fast to its tradition of excellence, harkening to the Filipino Masters of the past while encouraging creative development in its growing roster of career and emerging contemporary artists. This year is a revelation of sorts as each artist is given a panel to showcase his or her best work, whether in watercolors, pastels, acrylics, oils or mixed media. There are no restrictions other than the uniform size of the display panels.
The group’s Art at the Shang show not only presents recent works by the more than forty-strong artists known for their interaction paintings and readiness to sketch anytime and anywhere, but also serves as a testament to the partnership that they enjoy with Shangri-La Plaza, which has served as home to their weekly sessions for the past few years. By exposing their creative process to the mall-going public, the group promotes the appreciation of Philippine art, attracting observation from students, professionals, families, veterans and potential art aficionados. In turn, only force majeure can stop the group from meeting each other weekly to bring out their arms of easels, pencils and other on-location art materials to bring out the best in each other with constructive criticism, camaraderie and the challenging practice of sketching from life.
Art at the Shang, The Saturday Group Anniversary show, will be on display from July 14 to 26 at the Shangri-La Plaza Atrium. Artists’ Reception will be held on July 17 at six o’clock in the evening. On July 24, the highly-anticipated raffle of members’ paintings will be held at the Art Plaza, situated on the mall’s fourth level, after the sketching session.
