Silverlens Gallery, SLab and 20SQUARE June 7 Shows
July 7, 2010, Wednesday
Silverlens kicks of the second half of 2010 with Some Die Young and Some Die Old by Corinne de San Jose. Corinne has always been fascinated by dead trees, her “favorite subject.” It all started with a drawing book her dad gave her as a child, which taught her how to draw a silhouette of a dead tree. For the first time, Corinne expresses her fascination in her photography and finds stillness in her search for trees in busy Manila. With black and white photographs, Corinne collects her trees and finds her artistic self.
In SLab, curator Norberto Roldan presents Beautiful Inside My Head Forever with Martha Atienza, Bea Camacho, Sam Kiyoumarsi and Pow Martinez. “Scavenged from the title of Damien Hirst’s auction catalogue, it lays a playful predicate for a suite of diverse works dealing with the common and not-so-common notions of portraits – portraits as faithful or imaginary profiles of ourselves or of the other – how we frame ourselves, or others, as a self-reflexive performance.” *With painting, photography, film, performance, the artists offer their versions of “self-deprecating criticism-self-criticism”.
Upcoming artist, Maria Jeona completes the three spaces with Sure Sure, Happy Happy, Picture Picture at 20SQUARE. Though still in University, Maria Jeona has already captured the interests of many in the Filipino art scene with her talent in painting and eye for the unexpected. In 20SQUARE, she presents work that bursts with happiness, but a happiness that is truly self-defined. With cut outs, shaped canvasses and drawings interspersed, Maria Jeona lets us in on her artistic “brew” of intuition and all things that make her happy.
All three shows open on July 7, Wednesday, 6-9pm.
