TATAK

Galerie Anna presents “Tatak” at the Art Center of the famed SM Megamall Art Walk. “Tatak” is the celebration of unprecedented Filipino visual artistry and individual talent through the distinctive works of Nunelucio Alvarado, Ferdinand Cacnio, Romulo Galicano, Renato Habulan, Joey Ibay, Raul Isidro, Raul Lebajo, Sofronio Y. Mendoza, and Lydia Velasco. To be held from April 27 to May 13, the exhibition gathers more than thirty works of these contemporary masters in order to assert the identity of the Filipino Artist. At par with the best artists of Asia and the rest of the world, these masters have showcased their unique contributions through their distinctive style: the stylized Social Realism of Alvarado and Habulan; the spiritual naturalism of Cacnio; the academic classicism of Galicano; the Expressionist power of Ibay and Velasco; the sublime abstracts of Isidro; the surreal imagination of Lebajo; and the Cubist mastery of Mendoza. “Tatak” thus marks the diverse and virile artistic temperament of the contemporary Filipino artist as they confront and depict the world with poetic mystery, biographical reminiscence, and adaptive and unequivocal originality. For more information on “Tatak,” kindly call Cita or Lino Tel. No. 470-25-11, or 470-98-69. You may also e-mail at: galerie.anna@yahoo.com. ID is a three-installment series of exhibitions conducted by a group of individuals of diverse creative practice, derived from a common root that is the Recto culture. These exhibits would define these artists’ identities and the link between where they originated and how they were transmuted to who they are at present, an assessment of what they have lost and what they have gained away from the culture. Each installment would attempt to either invoke or respond, or connect and explore the question “Who am I?” pertaining to themselves as individuals or a product that took shape from the same historical reservoir that is Recto and in what ways this culture is being echoed in their respective artistic routines.

The first leg of the ID shows would divulge in the life of Eugenio Mallabo Recto from the documentations and artifacts collected from his existence. The installation is proposed to create testimony of an identity that purely existed on falsehood, imagining illusory events that took place in the life of our nonexistent persona. An identity completely made in Recto that would narrate to the artists partaking in this exhibit as specialists of both the DIY (Do it yourself) and the HIDBO (Have it done by others) cultures, both evident in the busy avenue that created their identities. Documents such as birth, baptismal, marriage, death and other certificates, identification cards, passports, licenses, and other forms of proof like name patches, campaign streamers and shirts were processed and contrived by the artists from Recto Avenue and is to be mounted on a tangled mesh of nylon strings across the walls of the gallery creating a misapprehension that the objects are suspended in mid-air, permitting the audience to provide validation to Mr. Recto as a reality thus validating the artists realities as well.

SURROGATES

THE REPLACEMENTS
Notes on Cris Villanueva’s Surrogates

Cris Villanueva Jr. used to work in advertising, and he draws on this, his tenure in the trenches, if you will, and whatever residual effects it might have had on his process, for the philosophical impetus of his latest show, Surrogates.

The current that courses through the show is this idea of surrogates, as more than mere replacements, but as substitutes that gain their own identity and resonance, and possibly even supersede the meanings of what they replace, re-encoding them with their own. The paintings here become surrogates themselves, of the photographs that served as its reference points and of the realities they represented.

Advertising is a surrogate craft , too, if only in the way it taps into the disciplines of literature and art and deputizes them with new imperatives, new thrusts, new codes. Broken down, though, advertising is ulitmately the curating of specific images to provoke the impulse to consume. Broken down, that’s what painting ulitmately is, too. And Surrogates is essentially an almost forensic examination of the point where his former career and his current art mesh.

Art and advertising tend to part ways on notions of purity, on issues of constraint. Villanueva has always recognized and even encouraged this dissonance. He still does, of course, but this time, he also navigates it.

Exhibition opening and Artist reception on the 14th of April 2012 at six o clock in the evening. The exhibition runs until 4 May 2012 at NOVA Gallery, Warehouse 12A, La Fuerza Compound, 2241 Don Chino Roces Ave., Makati City.

“Naked Truth” opens on April 14 at Galerie Anna, The Artwalk, Fourth Floor, Megamall-A, Mandaluyong City. The show runs until April 30. For inquiries, call +632 470-2511 or email galerie.anna@yahoo.com.

Tin-aw Art Gallery presents “1,” a solo exhibition of recent works by visual artist Ferdie Montemayor. The monochrome acrylic paintings depict crowds rushing to destinations known only to them. These medium scale works on canvas show cycling figures, running bodies, and congregations in a range of movement. Swarms of bodies plod pavements in measured steps, furiously pump bicycles, and rhythmically jog to the finish. The artist’s fluid and dense brushwork and figures that ease out and fill pictorial space conjure a tense atmosphere of deluge and rush.

Montemayor takes cue from past works of landscapes filled to the brim, labyrinths of structures transforming earthly space into a perplexing, alien form. This is the globe seen from the artist’s vantage, a sphere of motley structures, skyscrapers dwarfing (slums), making the earth one tangled mass of gnarled networks. A heightened sense of movement, frenzy if you will marks this new series in the artist’s body of work. Earlier canvases especially those from 2009, were marked by a profusion of inert bodies. The works for the exhibit on the other hand breathe movement mostly frenetic, bodies stirring to rhythm and steering towards redemption or catastrophe, we are yet to know. Montemayor speaks to the perilous state humanity is in, of unremitting greed overwhelming earth’s finite resources. The artist summons us to join the crowd, to imagine ourselves within the fray, and feel the crush life has become in a world increasingly on edge.

WHEN THE EARTH SMELLED OF WATER

Alliance Française de Manille (AFM) presents
" When The Earth Smelled Of Water "
by Elmer Borlongan and Plet Bolipata

Alliance Française de Manille (AFM) is proud to announce that its Total Gallery will host the exhibition “When The Earth Smelled Of Water” by Elmer Borlongan and Plet Bolipata.

In the words of writer Rene Guatlo:

“ Water is the source of life. In Genesis, it was there even before light was. The human body and the earth's oceans are composed of roughly two-thirds water - one of those facts that point to life beginning in the sea, before primeval life moved to land. It is the first element that scientists look for to check for the viability of life in any planet.

Floods meanwhile, eradicate life. The annual flooding of the Nile perhaps best illustrates this duality: the higher the flood, the more silt on the riverbanks, the greater the next harvest.

Based in San Antonio, Zambales, in a seaside mango orchard and art center, the artist couple Elmer Borlongan and Plet Bolipata bring their visions of creation, their celebrations of life to the city: colorful canvases imbued with the refreshing and life-giving blessings of the sea and water, resin vessels that allude to the ark, and the great deluge that drowned the earth, so that life may be renewed.

Emong highlights various scenes - a 'chicken fight' in the water, a child drawing water from a well, fishermen with their nets, an escape artist in a water container, a woman wading into the ocean, a scene of melancholy in a bath tub - each an allusion to water and the sea, reflecting the artist's signature humor, wit, and deep understanding of the human character. He says: "We are drawn to water because we live close to the sea."

Plet always injects a fresh and playful sensibility to her art, which includes oils, collages, naif figures, and lately, colorful mosaics of animals. Her metal and tile mosaics of zoo animals about to be installed at Global City are complemented by the resin sofas in this show that were inspired by Holly Golightly's bathtub sofa from Breakfast at Tiffany's. The sofas represent vessels that save us from the deluge, their colors reminding us of the rainbow that symbolizes God's promise, and our hope. She hopes that people "can relax as the stresses and strains of their daily lives subside, and take the time to enjoy and appreciate the preciousness of life."

Elmer and Plet point to the beginning of time, the beginning of art, in their show at Alliance Française de Manille”

Elmer Borlongan and Plet Bolipata’s exhibition “When The Earth Smelled Of Water” opens on Thursday, April 12, 2012, at the Alliance Française Total Gallery of the Alliance Française de Manille, with cocktails at 6:30pm to 9pm. The exhibit runs until May 3, 2012. For high resolution images of the artworks and more details about the exhibit, kindly contact Mr. Earl Parco (AFM Cultural Officer) at 895 7441 / 895 7585 or email cultural@alliance.ph, or visit the AFM website at www.alliance.ph.
