What does identity mean? And how exactly do we measure the essence of whatever it is we are trying to represent? We can exhaust all symbolic devices and stories we can attach ourselves with, we can choose how much of ourselves we would like to reveal and what stories to tell in order to grasp a defining characteristic that would condense all the system of representations we’ve thought of and dreamed of expressing. To whom would this exercise make sense? How can this personal evaluation be of any use to the spectator?
If reality is as loose of a term as truth, and if we can claim anything to be something, then reality can be as fluid and frivolous as nothing. We crave for a body or a solid state to root ourselves to a more steady ground. Our thickened skin and lumps of flesh might as well be of frothy mush without a firm grasp of an idea we can connect with. Solidity can be viewed as a state of matter characterized by resistance to deformation or even insignificance. Solidity is also synonymous to a real, unadulterated articulation of a person’s place in the whole scheme of things where in the retelling of stories, symbols and other elements puts the person in a fixed, steady space relative to the environment that he or she exists in.
SOLID is a group show featuring the works of Sharen Ariola, Kelly Auxilian, Marc Capones, Sam Feleo, Amanda Legasto, Aris Padua, Sherilyn Vargas, Ryan Villamael, Tanya Villanueva and Miko Uy. The exhibit opens 10 July 2009, 6pm @ Whitebox Studio, Cubao Expo Araneta Center. For more information please call 437-3839 or email whitebox_studio@yahoo.com.
