Artist Geraldine Javier draws inspiration from nature and her surroundings in her new one-woman exhibit at West Gallery, titled Butterfly’s Tongue. On view at West Gallery from September 17 through October 19, the exhibit features Javier’s latest paintings in oil and mixed media.
Accomplished as she is in the field of visual arts, Javier, a CCP Thirteen Artists Award recipient, is far from resting on her laurels. In Butterfly’s Tongue, flora and fauna are seen in a new light, as Javier incorporates into her paintings different influences, from the classics to her trips abroad. Like a butterfly stopping by to smell the flowers, Javier pauses to interpret her subjects in a manner that they begin to come to life again. She combines both classic and contemporary compositions, injecting Filipino culture as much as she can in each of the works that fill all the three exhibit galleries of West Gallery. Her attention to detail remains evident, and she even takes it further in her three-dimensional works, using materials like textile, preserved beetles and butterflies, embroidery, and resin to capture images and scenes that fancy her. The elements of three-dimensionality and additional handiwork add to the mystique of each piece.
Javier revels in the richness of subject matter she can use in her paintings. From the innate beauty of the outdoors, she also pays attention to the unique charm of indoor subjects. What keeps her going is the freedom to paint as she pleases. Veering away from the photo-realistic style of her earlier works, she has begun using texture to make her pieces look painterly. She isn’t the type who is complacent with success, but is more driven to see and portray ideas in as many ways as she can execute them.
Javier first studied nursing at UP before finding her calling in painting, earning her second undergraduate degree at the UP College of Fine Arts.
