Thai artist Natee Utarit unveils first solo show in Manila
Finale Art File, in cooperation with Richard Koh Fine Art, brings the works of acclaimed contemporary Thai visual artist Natee Utarit to Manila this November with Bourgeois Dilemma, a show of his new works in oil on linen, from November 4 to 26, 2011 at Finale's Tall Gallery. This exhibit is Utarit's first one-man show in the Philippines.
Bourgeois Dilemma features Utarit's series of new paintings which seamlessly merge photo-realism, symbolism, and social commentary. Utarit produces a series of austere and allegorical still life paintings—comprised of disparate objects set in empty spaces—which conjure a narrative of the disquieting realities and contradictions that his country faces. Utarit's works focus on the visual power of singular images, distilling symbols of power, royalty, and upheaval into nuanced and minimalist paintings that can be simultaneously used to enthrall and to critique.
Natee Utarit lives and works in Bangkok, Thailand. His work as a painter has spanned more than two decades and has engaged various styles, subjects, and ways of seeing art; intentionally merging Western visual aesthetics with commentaries on contemporary Thai politics and society.
Utarit holds a BFA in Graphic Art from the Faculty of Painting, Sculpture, and Graphic Arts of Silpakorn University, Bangkok. A major retrospective of the artist's works, entitled Natee Utarit: After Painting, was unveiled last year at the Singapore Art Museum from October 2010 to February 2011.
Bourgeois Dilemma is organized by Finale in cooperation with Richard Koh Fine Art. The show runs from November 4 to 26, 2011 at Finale's Tall Gallery.
