We’ve invited some of the the country’s best artists, writers, graphic designers, photographers to express, in an image, their view what it means to be Filipino.
Their artworks will be printed onto large outdoor banners, which will then be displayed and installed at the Friendship Park just in time for the opening. The Project will create a new kind of experience that allows visitors to view and appreciate great art, and explore important social themes in a creative environment.
After closing, the banners will be recycled and turned by two women’s communities in Antipolo and Laguna into bags and sold as original works of functional art. Proceeds will be used to support Padyak, a UP Mountaineers-led organization that promotes cycling and environmentalism as a lifestyle, as well as CANVAS’ various programs to promote greater awareness and appreciation for Philippine art, culture and the environment.
If you’re not able to join us in Palawan, don’t worry… the original works will be exhibited at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, 2nd and 3rd Floor Hallways as well as the Little Theater Lobby from May 12 until June 7, 2009.
And, we’ll be replicating the outdoor banner show in the University of the Philippines in June 2009. We plan to line the banners all around the Academic Oval so that everyone will have a chance to enjoy them, especially on Sundays when the Oval is closed off to traffic and families come out to play, jog and just be together.
WHO’S PARTICIPATING IN THE OUTDOOR BANNER EXHIBIT?
By the time we hold the show in UP, we hope to have gathered enough participants to produce at least 120 banners (which would be enough to showcase one artwork every 20 meters or so of the 2.2km Academic Oval.
Some of the artists who have already committed to joining include Daniel Aligaen, Mark Arcamo, Ral Arogante, Anton Balao, Jeho Bitangcor, Plet Bolipata, Malyn Bonayog, Elmer Borlongan, Serj Bumatay, Michael Cacnio, Buen Calubayan, Jef Carnay, Marika Constantino, Dansoy Coquilla, Don Dalmacio, Kawayan de Guia, Kidlat de Guia, Crisanto De Leon, Maan De Loyola, Farley del Rosario, Anthony Fermin, Tina Fernandez, Karen Flores, Emmanuel Garibay, Sajid Imao, Agang Maganda, Josue Mangrobang, Lotsu Manes, Roel Obemio, Jay Pacena II, Vincent Padilla, Anthony Palomo, Jucar Raquepo, Iggy Rodriguez, Kirby Roxas, Mark Salvatus, CJ Tanedo, Daniel Tayona, Wesley Valenzuela, Ian Valladarez and some 20-30 students from the UP College of Fine Arts.
YOU, TOO, CAN BE PART OF THIS EXHIBIT.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE FILIPINO? Send us your answer - in either English or Filipino - in 30 words or less, and if we like it, we’ll include it in some of the banners. All we can offer is proper attribution, so be sure to state your name as you would want it to appear on the banner, if ever.
You’ll still own all rights to your words - but by submitting an entry, you give us royalty-free permission to display your words on the banners, on our website and for a book that we may publish on the artworks and words that were part of the banner exhibit.
So think about it, put it into words, email us at info@canvas.ph on or before May 15, 2009 - and be part of this unique and exciting show!
