MIXED EMOTIONS displays Natalie’s fascination in the human face and the many expressions it can make. Exhibited is a full range of human emotions, from the quiet contemplative moments to the more explosive outbursts of joy, anger or grief. These are private and public emotions caught in that instant before they vanished.
The effect on the viewer is one of mixed emotions. Part voyeur, confidante, friend and foe, we move through the crowd and recognize, if not the faces on display, then certainly the look on them. They are reflections of our own.
It is a challenge to capture that sense of connection yet discord in a modern portrait. Natalie paints from abstract heads to natural portraits but mostly somewhere in between. “Before I place the painting knife to the canvas I think about the face I am about to paint. Once I make a brushstroke, I want to leave that stroke alone. It contains all my emotion. It’s raw and honest and I don’t want to mess with it”.
It's a style which celebrates and shows off the materials made to create it: paint and a brush or a painting knife. “My oil paintings always have a balance between the different colors. I prefer natural but vivid, saturated and warm colors. The colors burst from the canvas. Using complementary colors make each seem brighter again.”
Natalie Buijs (1968), a Dutch resident of the Philippines, is a multifaceted artist. In addition to painting she is also an accomplished furniture designer and design engineer. She designed several signature pieces for the renowned Dutch Design Company ‘Leolux’ . In the Philippines she has designed unique ranges for companies including Diretso and Designs Ligna. Natalie particularly likes to combine native materials and cultural influences with avant garde design from Europe. This is also displayed in the frames of her paintings. For the MIXED Emotions exhibition she has commissioned frames made from sugarcane stalks.
Natalie will exhibit at Ricco Renzo Galleries & Caffe starting May 7, 7pm with an opening cocktail. The exhibit runs until June 7, 2009. For inquiry please call Kaye Nuguid at 898-2545 or 0927-386-1460 or visit www.riccorenzo.com
