Mga BARAHANG LIGAW (Wild Cards) of Eugene CUBILLO @ Galerie OneWorkshop
“Barahang Ligaw” (Wild Cards) is a first solo show of Eugene CUBILLO, features a collection of paintings in oil on canvas and mixed media works that reflect on how life is like a gamble. The idea behind the creative process of the artist is to alter the playing cards with hand-drawn, transfer prints and collaged images, fragments of paper, adding layers of color and texture to produce a meta-content and new ideas. It is a process to create, destroy and recreate.
Using playing cards as a part of his medium is to speak of the materials themselves and the inspiration involved in interconnecting and entwining it with the society we live in, one where we play both fair and dirty to survive and struggle, to win or to lose, depending on how we play or choose our role in life and in society.
Cubillo equate that people are like a deck of cards. We are bound and connected to each other. We have kings and queens in our lives, as embodied in our leaders and loved ones; we have aces, just like our idols and favorites; and we have numbers and rankings, just like our status in life. We can play to others and can play by others. We are the players of the game called life. Art is life, life is wild. We risk and we gamble.
Eugene Cubillo is an alumnus of Institute of Fine Arts and Design at the PWU Taft Manila. He has participated in several recognized art competitions. His works have been also exhibited in various art galleries and art spaces in the Philippines.
