The visual arts are a figurative window for looking at reality: a new way of continuously reframing the present in response to the past.
This evolving and reflexive nature of representation has also included the act of deliberately appropriating art works from the past. The mass reproduction of images has allowed the quicker and wider transmission and exchange of images across countries and contexts. This has yielded more possibilities for experimenting with representation, where the act of copying can be simultaneously considered as an act of changing the nature of the art object itself.
In Eccentric Windows, Annie Cabigting offers a suite of shaped oil on canvas paintings to explore this process of intentional creation from appropriation. Cabigting utilizes images cropped from reproductions of selected works by earlier artists, including French surrealist Henri Magritte, American artist-architect Gordon Matta-Clark, and environmental artist Christo. In doing so, Cabigting's works draw attention to the historical influence of surrealism and conceptual art—and the interconnections between the two—on present day art making.
