Upcoming Shows in August: Body Prop by Gina Osterloh at silverlens; Into the Abyss: White Album by Costantino Zicarelli at SLab and 20SQUARE
Up next in Silverlens this August is Body Prop by Gina Osterloh at silverlens and Into the Abyss: White Album by Costantino Zicarelli at SLab (Silverlens Lab) and 20SQUARE.
Body Prop is a successor of Osterloh’s exhibits known for their room-sized sets. Often using the body to complete her work’s messages, Osterloh works with characteristics that are readily accessible – simple color palettes (red and black; white and grey; and blue); the use of portraiture; and material such as paper and cardboard. The structure of the set combined with the positions of the bodies creates a play between two and three-dimensionality, where characters and patterns share similarities in order to make their differences visible.
Ambient music plays at the other side of the bridge.
For his first solo show at Silverlens, Zicarelli makes use of classical techniques such pencil sketching and sculpting, to create intricate, contemporary pieces. Into the Abyss: White Album draws inspiration from the artist's musical influences such as drone music, black metal, the Beatles and Kurt Cobain, as well as personal experiences and fictional ideas. Though youthful in nature, Zicarelli's work possesses honesty that all will be able to relate to.
The two shows open on August 3 and will run until August 27, 2011. In conjunction to the two shows on Sat, August 6 at Silverlens Gallery, will be a viewing & discussion of semi-short abstract films – Allures (1961) and Samadhi (1967) by artist and filmmaker, Jordan Belson. The films are part of the set, 5 Essential Films, which combines electronic music with visual projections of color, motion and patterns.
