Lawmaker wants removal of controversial exhibit

MANILA -- After seeing the controversial “Kulo” exhibit at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), Ilocos Norte Representative Imelda Marcos convinced members of the CCP board to take out the exhibit.
“I was very appalled this morning…majority of them of the cultural center board – they decided they will withdraw and take out the exhibit,” Marcos said in Monday’s session at the House of Representatives.
“This was not at all right. This was ugly as it was only a desecration of a sacred symbol,” she added.
Marcos made the statement after Manila Representative Amado Bagatsing raised to deliver a privilege speech demanding the resignation of CCP officials who allowed the exhibit. Bagatsing had already filed a House resolution asking for the officials’ resignation.
“I don’t’ know what’s taking the CCP officials so long for keeping this horrendous, unthinkable – nauubos na adjective ko – (exhibit). (They should) stop this,” he said.
“Where in the world can you see images of Jesus Christ with a penis? San ka nakakita sa buong mundo na si Hesukristo pinaglalaruan (Where in the world can you see a Jesus Christ being played with? And yet sinasabi that the CCP promotes Filipino culture,” he stressed referring to the artworks of artist Mideo Cruz. (Kathrina Alvarez/Sunnex)
