One of the leading modernists of his generation, Arturo Luz was named National Artist in 1997. His works inspired and influenced the next generation of artists working on minimalism and non objectivism. Monumental features several large-scale abstract sculptures that are variations on or revisits of Luz’s past themes—the celebration circus performers of the 1960s, the taut anito figures in the early 1970s, and the origami-inspired constructs of the late 1970s. The exhibition is envisioned as the first in a series of public art exhibitions to be organized by Greenbelt, which aims to make art more accessible to the public and to generate greater awareness of the works of world-class Filipino artists.
Monumental runs until 29 March 2009 at Ayala Museum and until June 2009 at Greenbelt Park.
