Artist's Statement:
My show consists of images in various grey hues, black and white. The concept is to present my work not on the basis of choice of subject matter, but merely on the techniques and approach to images with intense light. Light so intense that it disfigures and creates empty spaces. A Space Between shows the different characteristics of light; the obvious spaces between the varying tones of gray are the light itself.
To focus more on light, one must not forget the essentials of black; black reciprocates white like the Chinese Yin Yang. When white and black are intertwined, gray is produced; gray bridges the gap between the two. Thus the concept of my show, A Space Between, was realized.
About the exhibition:
Multi-awarded Philippine artist Randy 'Andoi' Solon will be breaking into the Singaporean art scene with A Space Between, his latest one-man show at Utterly Art. A Space Between features Solon's recent works rendered in different shades of grey: images culled from the artist's first attempts to study light and its effects on his subjects.
Solon holds two degrees in the visual arts: a Bachelor of Fine Arts, major in Painting, at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City, and a Certificate in Advertising from the Philippine Women's University in Manila. Solon is the recipient of numerous awards from national art competitions. He was the Grand Prize winner in the 2006-2007 PLDT-PDC Telephone Directory Cover 20th Visual Art National Competition for the oil on canvas work entitled “Kabataan, Iguhit mo ang Bukas, Kulayan mo ang Pag-asa”. He was a three-time Finalist in the 38th, 39th and 40th Shell National Student Painting Competition in 2005, 2006 and 2007 (oil/acrylic categories) and a semi-finalist in the oil/acrylic category of the Metrobank Foundation National Competition in 2006, 2005, and 2004.
