"Turn The Tables" by Ronaldo Ruiz
Filipino visual/performance artist Ronaldo Ruiz returns to his original medium of choice, painting. Using a Japanese performance artist who uses a table to perform his art as the subject for his new series of paintings, Ruiz cleverly captures the nuances of two diverse yet co-related branches of art : performance arts and visual arts- on his canvas, succinctly capturing the unique position he is traversing in the world of art. The exhibition will also present a video installation.
Ronaldo honed his skills in Fine Arts at the University of the East in the Philippine, and has emerged as one of the Philippines ’ multi-awarded artists. At the beginning of 2009, he was bestowed the Metrobank Foundation for Continuing Excellence and Services award. Ruiz was one of the Thirteen Artist Awardees recognized by Cultural Center of the Philippines for his contribution to Philippine Contemporary Art in 2003. He is also a two-time recipient of the Philip Morris Philippines Art Awards in 2000 and 1997.
The works of Ruiz often incorporate painting, installation and performance shows of which have been exhibited in, to name a few, Australia, Canada, China, Dubai, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Japan, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea and Thailand. His works are part of the collections of the Singapore Art Museum and the Museum of Macau . He is currently the director of Tupada Action and Media Art, a Philippine-based non-profit organization that holds international performance arts event and provides venues for artists to engage ideas and practices about the new media art.
The artist will be Artesan Gallery + Studio’s first artist-in-residence for 2009 from March 10 – 27. He will also be on hand to discuss his works and creative process at the gallery.
