HABULAN AT BRITANIA ART PROJECTS GALLERY
Britania Art Projects presents “Takatak,” Renato Habulan's exhibit of works in various media, opening on March 14, with previews from March 6. The show charts the social realist's forays into assemblage and maps out his continued exploration of materials and techniques. The exhibition is also a celebration of Renato Habulan’s 30th year anniversary as a visual artist.
Habulan is known for his social realist paintings of workers and peasants juxtaposed with scenes of mass action and religious imagery in the oil medium. He describes his state of mind while producing his paintings as heavy and obsessive, burdened by the weight of his themes of social justice and religious fanaticism. By consciously applying to his more recent creations the processes he taught as an educator in formal and informal settings over the past two decades, he finds release from the limits imposed by the two dimensions. The use of mixed media highlights the Thirteen Artists Awardee's sentimentality and attachment to personal objects loaded with meanings and memories. By affixing these ready-mades and created items, Habulan detaches himself from these possessions and immortalizes them in his art as thought-out bricolage.
The featured pieces range from the artist's Takatak series from 2004, building on the wooden boxes used by street vendors, to his latest endeavors incorporating pottery, oil painting and wax in the same piece while clearly demarcating the division of the materials. Compartmentalized but not completely boxed in, the structure of the works echo the artist's creative philosophy and the distinct periods of his life.
From his early years as a child prodigy and award-winning young artist to his activism in the 1970s until the EDSA Revolution, to his current role as a mentor to students of all ages, Habulan never forgets to look back and give back through his advocacies. The continuing cycle of struggle and fulfillment makes “Takatak” a celebration of Habulan's life in art on his birth month.
Britania Art Projects is located at 68 Sgt. Catolos corner New York Avenue, Cubao, Quezon City. For more information, please call 3876373 and 09175710468 or visit www.britaniaartprojects.com
