Call for Proposals on Photography and Video Art for KM1
An exhibition grant from the French Embassy in the Philippines, the Alliance française de Manille, together with the Niepce Museum in France
1. Background
The Embassy of France in Manila, in collaboration with the Niepce Museum, one of the most significant photography museums in France, in cooperation with Filipino partners, are organizing the second in a series of exhibitions slated for June 2012 dedicated to photography and digital imagery.
This project began with “KM0: Side by Side” held at the Quezon Memorial Circle in May 2011 in partnership with the Quezon City local government. KM0 was envisioned to pioneer a long-term project bringing photography to the forefront of exhibitions in different venues in and out of the capital. It focused on going beyond conventional forms of exhibiting and viewing photographic images so as to explore creative ways of presentation appropriate within a Filipino context and aptly addressing Philippine reality.
2. Objective
KM1 aims to create an art event dedicated to photography and video. Similar to the "Photography Month" organized in Paris, or the "Path of Art" in Avignon (France), this edition seeks to lead the public on an exploration of art through a series of venues. From galleries and museums into parks and walkways, it calls audiences to reflect on how photographic images relate to and/or transform lives.
Through the commission of new work, this event aims to bring Filipino and French artists together, with the support of a curatorial team headed by the Director of the Niepce Museum, Mr. François Cheval. Artists are to propose a work around the theme “what remains, what disappears” and are encouraged to envision spaces in the Greater Metro Manila Area for the exhibition of their work.
3. Expectations
This call is intended for artists (professional or amateurs) who have a considerable body of work to support their proposal. Projects should demonstrate ingenuity in photographic production and attention to detail in the presentation of the final artwork.
In November 2011, François Cheval and the French Embassy and Alliance Française’s partners will convene to elect the Filipino artist to be exhibited with a French photographer. The artist will then have a chance to work with a curator to engage in a fulfilling dialogue regarding the work to be commissioned. A six-month period for production will be allotted to the artist from December 2011 thru May 2012.
4. Rules
Proposals:
1) The proposal must include:
1.1) A general statement in English, French or Filipino of not more than 300 words describing in detail the proposed work, production time frame and costs.
1.2) A comprehensive portfolio highlighting recent work.
1.3) Specification on materials and equipment needed for production and installation depending on preferred venue (eg. gallery, open-air space).
2) All works should use a form of photography, the presentation of which may be in print, video or installation. The artist has to justify his/her choice of media in the general statement.
3) The deadline for submission of proposals is on Saturday, 15 October 2011.
Exhibition:
1) The venue will be determined upon acceptance of proposal, in collaboration with the artistic committee who can facilitate exhibition arrangements with host institutions.
2) The organizers shall cover exhibition costs. Contribution towards the production costs of final artworks will be determined prior to the acceptance of the proposal, according to our budget allowance.
3) The artist will retain all rights to his/her final artworks. He/She shall give to the organizers the right of exhibiting them in Great Metro Manila and other venues in the Philippines (upon acceptance from our Filipino partners outside Manila) and for replication of the works - for the realization of the Catalogue, the archives of the project, the publication of the artworks and for other forms of communication and activities related to the event and further exhibitions.
4) The exhibition will be presented in late. Commissioned works may be presented by the organizers at other venues thereafter with permission from the artist.
The proposal should be sent by email preferably in PDF file to culturel.ambafrance.manille@gmail.com
