Diverse subjects and styles make up the September shows at Silverlens: SLICE by Kidlat de Guia at silverlens, Working In Progress: Chati Coronel, Corinne De San Jose and Ryan Villamael curated by Adeline Ooi at SLab (Silverlens Lab), and Water Windows by Jeanne Tan at 20SQUARE.
Kidlat de Guia's lightboxes fill up silverlens. Drawing inspiration from the movement of time, the artist captures fragments of a forgotten landmark in his hometown Baguio, Camp John Hay. His pictures are beautifully striking and achingly transparent, showing us the everything of these abandoned spaces. The result is nostalgia of time afleeting.
In Working In Progress, three young artists from different backgrounds, interests and disciplines unite:
Sound engineer and photographer Corinne De San Jose fuses audio and visual expression through photography and video art. Like De Guia, she is inspired by the nature of time, applying a more abstract interpretation to her works.
A more playful take on art is present in Chati Coronel's set of vibrant and dreamy oil paintings possessing characteristics of spiritual imagery and abstraction. Her work captures the vivid imagination of a child-- something she is in touch with because of her maternal role.
For artist Ryan Villamael, a new technique of layering is employed to his work, in addition to his usual intricate papercutting. The aesthetic of this series is inspired by patterns of the Kalinga tribe tattoos. Though small in size, his works are rooted from the vast expanse of time-- what stays, what changes, and the consequences of each.
Working without a particular exhibition theme or framework, each artist sets out to explore new concepts and directions with the guidance of curator Adeline Ooi.
At 20SQUARE, see what's behind Jeanne Tan's Water Windows.
The artist, an environmentalist, expresses her connection with and concern for the Philippine waters in a series of oil paintings. This is part of a series of her efforts to help generate awareness on the planet. Her art gives life to 20SQUARE's walls. Just like windows that make us see what's behind the wall blocking our view, it's an eye opener for all.
SLICE, Working in Progress and Water Windows reach out to the viewer on a personal level. It's an opportunity to learn more about the art behind the piece, and on another level, the person behind the art.
The three shows will run until September 24, 2011.
Related gallery events complementing each show are on the following dates: September 03 for Working In Progress curated by Adeline Ooi featuring Chati Coronel, Corinne De San Jose and Ryan Villamael, September 17 for Water Windows by Kidlat de Guia and September 24 for SLICE by Kidlat de Guia.
